Moodle Grade Book and Assessment techniques
An overview of the functionality within Moodle to use assessment tools as a way of tracking and reporting users progress through out a course. The Moodle grade book is used to collate and process different assessment items.
We will look at
- An overview of how grading works in Moodle,
- Different types of assessable items to use within Moodle,
- How the results are entered into Moodle,
- How the results are view in Moodle,
- How we can output results from Moodle.

Online Assignments

Online assignments allow teachers to grade electronically submitted material that has been entered directly into the browser window.
Just remember participants need to click "edit my submission" to open the editor window

| 3 | Offline Assignments

Offline Assignments allow teachers to grade material submitted physically (a design project or they just like to mail in their submission, or something like an interview or face to face assessment or class presentations).
Remember that the participant does not have to enter anything here, the lecturer enters the grades manually.

| 5 | Moodle Quizzes

This module allows the teacher to design and set quiz tests, consisting of multiple choice, true-false, and short answer questions and more. Each attempt is automatically marked, and the teacher can choose whether to give feedback or to show correct answers.

| 6 | Self Marking SCORM Quizzes

SCORM Object are able to be inserted into Moodle and then tracked via the grade book. The SCORM object needs to be constructed correctly and pass variables into Moodle for this to happen.

Hot Potato is an external Quiz making tool that integrates seamlessly with Moodle. It has a few nice features such as making crosswords, hangman etc.

| 9 | Grade Book 1.9
Overview
-
The Moodle grade book has many uses and has been completely re written for the latest release of Moodle 1.9. The assessableitems are displayed along with either a score, or a dash (indicating that an attempt has not been made).
Many of the option below are found by,
- turning editing on,
- clicking on the Grade option in the administration menu,
- selecting the drop down box in the top left of the screen.

| 10 | Enrol students in course to enable grading.To enable any type of grading and reporting a student needs to be enrolled in that particular course.
It does not matter if they manually enrol, self enrol, use an enrollment key etc, jsut as long as they are a student in your course. (Assign roles for Teachers and Admin)

Categories allow you to pull together certain types of assessment items. For example, online and offline activities.

| 12 | Letter Grades
- Letter grades allow you to show text as an outcome of the assessment results instead of a number, ie A, B, C, D, E.
Competent and Not yet Competent are also commonly used.

| 13 | Manually Editing Grades (turn editing on)
- You are able to manually change grades for the grade book, click on the "Turn Editing on" button, then you will see a small editing Icon next to each of the participants assessment items, click on this and change the marks here.

| 15 | Site wide settings and Outcomes and.......Site wide settings can also be made by the administrator on the front page of the site. There are many options to choose from here so do not get overwhelmed, this is not for the faint hearted...lol
Outcomes are brand new to Moodle, similar to competencies, not sure we will have time to cover this.

The grade book for each course is able to be exported in a number of different file types,
- Excel,
- OPF,
- Plain Text,
- XML file

| 18 | Certificate ModuleThis is a very useful module that can be added to your moodle by your administrator that allows for a printed "Certificate" to be produced once a particular score has been reached for a particular assessable item (actually multiple asssessable items) Great for students to keep as a record of their success, they love it ( Dry Cleaning example)

Online Reporting Tool
This is a tool I am helping develop, using web services and Adobe Flex to display the results. The system queries the Moodle database in real time, pulling information out as required, which can be sorted, searched and then outputted as either a printed document or a .csv file.
