An introduction from the website

The Hot Potatoes suite includes six applications, enabling you to create interactive multiple-choice, short-answer, jumbled-sentence, crossword, matching/ordering and gap-fill exercises for the World Wide Web. Hot Potatoes is not freeware, but it is free of charge for those working for publicly-funded non-profit-making educational institutions, who make their pages available on the web. Other users must pay for a licence. Check out the Hot Potatoes licensing terms and pricing on the Half-Baked Software Website.

Below I have explained how to install the software, how to enable Moodle to accept the Hot Potatoe quizzes and then how to make the actual quizzes.

How to install Hot Potatoes Quiz Maker

First of all you need to download the software from the hot potatoes website at

http://hotpot.uvic.ca/index.php#downloads

Usually the first "Hot Potatoes Installer" will be fine.

Then run the downloaded package, and install the software on your machine (I usually just let it install where it suggests to). Hot Potatoes Quiz Maker Software should now be installed on your machine.

How to make a Hot Potatoes Quiz

On your desktop, open the Hot Potatoes software.

Select the "JQuiz" option from the front page.

Insert a meaningful Title for your quiz something like "Australian Geography Quiz"

Select what type of question you would like to ask choosing from,
  1. Multiple Choice,
  2. Short Answer,
  3. Hybrid, or
  4. Multi-Select
Place your question in the Text box next to the Question Numer near the top of the window.

Then add the potential answers, selecting with a tick, the "Correct" answer for one of the potential answers.

Once you have added your questions and answers, save the file with the .jqz extension.

This file can then be uploaded into the course you have built in moodle and linked via the HotPot Activity Module.

The results will then be recorded automatically in your Moodle grade book as the participants complete the quizzes.
